Everybody's Got a Laughin' Place...

Welcome to those of you joining me from Disney on Wheels and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the final stop on our Magical Blogorail.

Did you know the word gullible isn't in the dictionary? I fall for these things all the time, which is why April Fools day tends to be a funny time in my house. This year April Fools day fell on a Monday which, quite frankly, is completely unfair. However, I am the first to share a good belly laugh over my stupidity and in Walt Disney World, I find myself constantly laughing.

Thank you to the Magical Blogorail Teal loop for letting me join in today as we discuss our favorite comedic shows, attractions and meet and greets. I am going to deviate slightly from the topic today. My family consistently cracks up at one place in the World each visit. It's not a attraction, but it should be. Our laughin' place is 50's Prime Time Cafe in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

At first glace, a Disney newbie may look at 50's Prime Time Cafe as a cute, simple little diner. Trust me when I say it is SO much more than that! It isn't just a place where you can get really delicious meatloaf and fried chicken (although you can definitely do that as well). It is simply an experience.

When you walk in the door, you will notice that you have been magically transported back to the 1950s. Have some older guests in your party? They will love this part. The decor looks like something out of Happy Days. There's a living room and a kitchen that will make everyone in your party chuckle. There are TVs playing old television clips from the 50s. When the hostess calls your party, they will announce "The Johnson kids" and the act has begun. Don't answer quick enough? Mom may send the "kids" to bed without dinner. (I'm serious)

The kids during a trip in August '07

Enter...your cousin? That's right, your cousin. (You didn't know that this was an extended family trip, did you?) Your cousin is your server and will start barking orders to you right away and with good reason. Mom has been slaving away in the kitchen all day to make your meal, so you better follow orders. At first you must set the table to your cousin's satisfaction. Then it's time to start ordering. Make sure you say please and thank you, or your cousin will call you out as ungrateful.

When your food comes, be sure to eat all of your veggies or you may get fed by your server. Are you one to talk back? Then you will be put in the corner! Truly get yourself in trouble? Then you'll be singing I'm a little tea pot out loud in front of all of your extended family...also known as the entire restaurant. Taking a trip to the restroom? Be sure to make note of the soap color, or you'll be accused of not washing your hands.

We always have a TON of fun at the 50's Prime Time Cafe. There are a lot of a little surprises along the way! You will have a wonderful time! Not into the shtick? Just let the hostess know and they'll tone down the act. However, I recommend playing along. If you do, you'll have one of the funniest Disney experiences available.

My Animal Kingdom DAKlamation: 15 Days to 15 Years

Jambo!

Can you believe the baby of the family, Disney's Animal Kingdom, is 15 years old this month? They grow up so fast! To commemorate this wonderful anniversary, DIStherapy and Pursuing the Magic are hosting a blog hop leading up to the big day. Each blogger was given a year to remember, and I spoke about my DAKlamation in 2004. What's a DAKlamation? You'll have to visit 15 Days to 15 Years to find out!

Imposters! Mickey Mouse in Times Square

I really hope that my Disney Pointers truly understand my frustration, because my husband laughed at my outrage.

I live in New York City, but I avoid Times Square at all costs. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Broadway and the theater, but the whole area has turned into a massive tourist trap. I understand why. I would love it if I wasn't from here, but I am and I just want to get to my show and eat chicken fingers that are less that $30.

A few weeks ago my husband and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary. We wanted to do something to celebrate but didn't really have the funds to go away; therefore, we decided to take a short staycation (which is understandably a lot more fun when you live in NYC). After work, I took the subway up to Times Square where we were staying. During my short walk from the 42nd Street subway station to our hotel on 45th Street, I saw not ONE, not TWO, not THREE, but FOUR imposter Mickey Mouses.

What is an imposter Mickey Mouse? Well, he looks something like this:

Why does this DRIVE ME CRAZY?

Well, as all my readers know, there is only one real Mickey Mouse. And as we all know, he lives at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, etc. Sometimes, when Mickey feels like a vacation, he takes a Disney Cruise. THERE IS ONLY ONE MICKEY MOUSE! The wonderful cast members at Disney work very hard to prevent any confusion about this.

However, they cannot control Times Square, as hard as they try. Therefore, there are imposter Mickey Mouses popping up on every single corner from 40th Street to 50th Street. I feel terrible for the kids who experience a Mickey Mouse who will only take a photo with them for cash. I feel even more terrible for the parents who have to answer all the awkward questions that are sure to arise.

Parents - heed my warning.  Times Square is a wonderful place to visit, but be prepared to let your kids know that there are many people impersonating Mickey Mouse. It's not pretty. And it will hopefully make you as angry as I am.

Wordless Wednesday: Jambo!

 Focused on the Magic

This Wordless Wednesday is brought to you by the letter J.

I decided to go with Jambo! Jambo is how you say "hello" in Swahili. If you visit Disney's Animal Kingdom Park or Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, you will be greeted with "Jambo" quite a few times!

A photo from our stay at Kidani Village, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, in November 2011.
I decided to use this Wordless Wednesday to start to commemorate Disney's Animal Kingdom. On April 22, Earth Day, Animal Kingdom will celebrate its 15th Birthday! I can't believe it's been that long! The Disney Point will have a special post in 15 Days to 15 Years, sponsored by DIStherapy and Pursuing the Magic. I am writing about the year 2004 and my post is scheduled for Saturday, April 13th. The posts so far have been so much fun and so informative - check them out!

Guide Maps Galore

(Isn't our new logo snazzy? Thanks so much to Mary at Capturing Magical Memories for all her hard work!)
Welcome to those of you joining me from The Magical Mouse Pad and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the final stop on our Magical Blogorail.

When I was a kid, my family used to place bets with each other while in the parks. We would bet each other on the most direct route to get from point A to point B. Who will arrive first? We would then break up into two groups and think of every shortcut to get from Space Mountain to Splash Mountain. Sometimes, we expanded this to park and resort hopping. What would be quicker - the bus or walking the International Gateway? The winner sometimes received a churro, but in most cases, we'd be happy for the bragging rights.

I knew all the ins and outs of Walt Disney World Resort before I hit high school. I ALWAYS know the closest restroom, store, ATM and refreshment stand; therefore, you may be shocked to know that one of my Disney obsessions is guide map collecting.

Thank you SO MUCH to Beth at Pursuing the Magic for sharing her guide map collection with me!

Upon check in at my Walt Disney World Resort hotel of my choice, before I head to my room, I double check my packet to make sure I have all my maps and Times Guides. I scrutinize them as if I never saw them before. I circle my priority attractions and make note of the park hours.

Do I need the maps? Nope. Never even pull them out at the park. But they are a terrific resource!

At the end of each trip, I take the same walk to the hotel lobby like I did at check-in (though admittedly sadder) and get a fresh set of maps. When I get home and create my photo album or scrap book, I create a folder in the back for all the maps. It is such a wonderful feeling to look and see what has changed throughout the years and what has remained the same.

As I always say, it's the Disney Circle of Life!

Thank you for joining Magical Blogorail Black this month. We will be back in May with an all new theme. Progress! Keep Moving Forward...

Disney Pointers -

Have you noticed I've been M.I.A. lately? Before my last few posts, I've haven't been around.

Let me fill you in on the last few months of my life. In October 2012, my hometown of Staten Island, NY was hit hard by Super Storm Sandy.

My family was very lucky. We were without power for a week or so, but it was simply a mild inconvenience compared to the people who to this day still don't have heat. They lost their homes, their livelihoods, all their possessions. I'll admit it, I have survivor's guilt.  Why was I spared? We are continuing to rebuild Staten Island. It is hard to see the place you grew up in shambles, but we are strong. I'm excited for the future here.

Shortly after the storm, we went on our planned vacation on the Disney Dream and Walt Disney World. I was incredibly guilty about going, given the circumstances back home. However, we couldn't get our money back and it's probably the last big vacation we will be taking for a long time (you'll see why shortly.)

As it turns out, we had a fabulous trip. I will be posting trip reports all month. Stay tuned!

When we returned home, we made the most exciting decisions of our lives. We are officially new homeowners! WOW this was a scary, stressful, thrilling and exhilarating process! The house we bought needed quite a bit of work - it's still a work in process - so I've been wrapped up with repairs lately. Throw the holidays into that mix and I think it's pretty apparent why I've been M.I.A. the last couple of months.

With our best friends at our new house

I also came to a very important conclusion: I do not have the time or money to continue to be a Disney Travel Specialist. This month, as my last client sailed on Disney Cruise Line, I said goodbye to Glass Slipper Concierge.  It was sad to say goodbye, but I honestly had to focus on my full time job (with my very important health benefits) and I wanted refocus my time.

Nonetheless, I've come to the realization that what I've missed more than anything over the last few months is this blog. I love talking Disney with my friends. This is going to become a priority again. I hope you will join me as we discuss the Happiest Place on Earth.

Thanks for reading!
