40 years ago today, Walt Disney World welcomed guests for the first time. Walt Disney's vision of "The Florida Project" came to life. The place that dreams come true, the place where my heart will live forever and the place I will never get enough of, turns 40 today... on the day I turn 27.
Oh yeah, it's my birthday too! Did I forget to mention that? If I was at WDW right now, I would be marching up to the Guest Relations window for my birthday pin, I would walk right down the middle of Main Street U.S.A. and I would be wished happy birthday by no less than 100 very dedicated Cast Members!
But I digress! On this wonderful day I am thinking about Walt Disney. I am reflecting on the wisdom, the courage and the imagination of a great man. Walt Disney had a gift--he knew how to make people happy. He's been making people happy and he has been helping people believe in the promise of their dreams for nearly a century.
And on this special day, I would like to remember Walt's dedication of Disneyland. Walt Disney never saw his creation, Walt Disney World, become a reality. Despite of what people may say, I think he would be thrilled with the expansion of WDW. Without Walt's foresight to buy all that swampland in Central Florida, we wouldn't have the empire we know and love today.
I think Walt's words at Disneyland said it all. Here they are, with a video of that special moment below:
"To all who come to this happy place:
Disneyland is your land.
Here, age relives fond memories of the past...
and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future.
Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America... with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."
- Walt Disney, July 17, 1955
Thank you, Walt, for the birthday gift that keeps on giving.
|Wait! How'd that get here! I said I never wanted to see this again! Thank GOD they didn't do this again!|
